Spain´s music festival season begins in earnest today with Barcelona´s Primavera Sound festival. The weekend promises to be the stuff of legends, but as with any festival, it can be difficult to prioritize. Let us take some of the work out of that.

Weezer sings Lady Gaga, MGMT // Weezer canta Lady Gaga, MGMT
A week or so ago, Weezer was playing the T-Mobile Party in Los Angeles. The result? This video everyone is blogging home about, where the band rips into MGMT's "Kids" and Lady Gaga's "Poker Face." Both covers are pretty decent (better than half of Weezer's last album) and refreshingly seem to lack irony. They're just dudes having fun, and the result is at the very least better than this.
Weezer is on tour this summer as a supporting act for the reunion of Blink-182.

Ex-member of Wilco found dead // Ex-miembro de Wilco se murió
We've posted quite a bit about Wilco as of late, but today it is with a sadder note. Former band member Jay Bennett passed away this weekend at the age of 45, Pitchfork Media reports. The cause of death is still unknown.
Bennett left the band in 2002 during the recording of Yankee Hotel Foxtrot and recently made headlines again by launching a lawsuit several weeks ago, where he demanded $50,000 in royalties. While the circumstances surrounding his last few weeks are tumultuous and his end tragic, we are left with his brilliant and indelible contributions to Wilco's early work.
Hicimos muchos postings sobre Wilco en tiempos recienters, pero hoy es por una razón mas triste. Ex-miembro del grupo Jay Bennett se falleció este fin de semana al edad de 45, redacció Pitchfork Media.

Wilco announced this week that they would be releasing an application for download to use with the iPhone and iPod Touch in anticipation with the release of Wilco (The Album) on June 30. The application will give fans access to tour dates, photos and other information about all things Wilco.
Wilco are not the first band to release an iPhone application. In April, Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails, ever the innovator of band-fan interactions, announced an application that basically worked as a mobile fan forum, including access to message boards and gig photos. The application is still in limbo as approval from Apple is still needed.
The band also released a version of the popular iPhone game "Tap Tap Revenge" including songs from their most recent album, The Slip.
Both the Tap Tap Revenge: NIN application and the Wilco app are now available at the iTunes App Store.

New Eminem: It's the Relapse, Baby

So there was this brief moment at the beginning of the decade when Eminem made a couple of party tracks and then faded into obscurity, lacking his usual controversy and grotesque charm. But by the middle of the horror-porn fantasy opening track "3 a.m.," he´s back to his old strategies, weaving macabre tales of fast food mass murders and fantasizing about tween TV stars. As disturbing as the images may be both here and all over the album, it´s nice to see Eminem back to his old violent, celebrity-destroying self after that awful Encore album.
While most of the album screams hit-or-miss, there are a few bright spots. "Insane" is classic, disturbed Em, weaving tales of his dark childhood. "Beautiful" is a rare moment of introspection and a gem and "Underground" may be one of the best tracks he´s ever done.
The party banger is "Old Time´s Sake," a stoner anthem featuring -- praise the Lord -- Dr. Dre. But while Dre´s appearance is a saving grace, it shows off Eminem´s faltering delivery. He tries to pass off this "Cheech and Chong"-meets-Miss Cleo accent that feels artificial and grating and takes away from the angry Midwestern boy aesthetic that makes his old material function so well. His Scottish accent on "Bagpipes from Baghdad," which probably would have been funny on one of his first two albums, is just insufferable now. Em, next time, just play it straight and leave the weird deliveries to Lil Wayne.

And the Heavens burst open with a mighty roar, the sun sank into the sea and Thom Yorke´s wonky left eye stayed still for a split second. Okay, so maybe none of that happened, but the indie blogger community on both hemispheres has been buzzing about the beginning stages of the band´s follow-up to In Rainbows since bassist Colin Greenwood told the BBC the album was in recording stages. In the interview, Greenwood called the recording sessions with British producer Nigel Godrich "very noisy and chaotic and really fun." Let´s hope the new material is too.

And the Heavens burst open with a mighty roar, the sun sank into the sea and Thom Yorke´s wonky left eye stayed still for a split second. Okay, so maybe none of that happened, but the indie blogger community on both hemispheres has been buzzing about the beginning stages of the band´s follow-up to In Rainbows since bassist Colin Greenwood told the BBC the album was in recording stages. In the interview, Greenwood called the recording sessions with British producer Nigel Godrich "very noisy and chaotic and really fun." Let´s hope the new material is too.

While you were watching Osasuna hold on to La Primera for dear life -- everyone in Pamplona -- the entire continent was glued to their TVs waiting for the final results of the 2009 Eurovision Song Contest in Moscow. Norwegian violinist Alexander Rybak not only won with his moving, folk-inspired track "Fairytale," but he won with an astounding 387 points, the largest margin of victory in the history of the competition and shattering the record set by Finnish metal band Lordi in 2006.

Cultura Urbana Festival - Madrid
Cultura Urbana, Spain's annual celebration of the Five Elements of Hip-Hop will take place tomorrow, May 16, at the Telefonica Arena in Madrid.
And it is truly an international lineup, with more hip-hop artists from all over the world than from Spain, including British grime king Dizzee Rascal headlining and a set from Chicago's king of consciousness, Common. Also appearing are edgy French-by-way-of-Senegal rapper Sefyu and, in a surprising comeback, American rapper Xzibit, last seen in his home country as the host of MTV's "Pimp My Ride."
That's not to say Spanish rap won't be well represented. Zaragoza MC Rapsusklei will
bring his funk and reggae-infused beats to the Movistar Stage from 23:50 to 00:40.
And since this is a celebration of all the elements of hip-hop, there will be live graffiti demonstrations, the fourth annual Eastpak Breakdance Battle and an emcee battle at the Movistar stage.
Tickets are still available on entradas.com for 36 Euro.

Wilco streaming new album // Wilco streaming nuevo album
Always ones to strive to keep fans smiling, alt-country heroes Wilco have put their latest album, Wilco (The Album) online as a stream so fans can get a taste of things to come.
There's much of the same pleasant, folky simplicity we saw on Sky Blue Sky. There's not much intricacy, but the soul and wit are still obvious. "Wilco (The Song)" shows off Jeff Tweedy's sense of humor and "One Wing" may be the band's best heartbreak anthem since the more aptly-titled "I Am Trying To Break Your Heart."
Siempre que se esfuerzan por mantener a los fans sonriente, héroes del alt-country Wilco han puesto su nuevo álbum, Wilco (El álbum) en línea como un stream para que los fanáticos pueden obtener una muestra de lo que vendrá.

Nacha Pop frontman Antonio Vega dies // Nacha Pop cantador Antonio Vega se murió
Singer-songwriter Antonio Vega of Nacha Pop died yesterday in Madrid of pneumonia. He was 51.
Nacha Pop was one of the pioneering bands of Spanish new wave and the Madrilenian Groove movement with their hit song, "La Chica de Ayer." The group disbanded in 1988, but gained a new following in 2001 when the song "Lucha de Gigantes" was used in the international hit film Amores Perros.
In honor of Vega, here´s a little "La Chica de Ayer."

Controversial John Lennon exhibit opens// Controversial exhibición de John Lennon abre
This is hardly the first John Lennon-related exhibit that has passed through America´s museum halls. But what makes "John Lennon: The New York Years," which opens this week at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame annex in New York City, different is one particularly controversial addition: a paper bag given to Yoko Ono containing Lennon´s bloody clothes from the night he was shot dead by crazed fan Mark David Chapman.
In a press conference about the event, Ono said she anticipated criticism over the addition of the item, but contended that it was important to highlight the enduring tragedy of gun violence. In a report from the Liverpool Daily Post, Ono said, "I know it’s a kind of a sad and very poignant kind of paradox, I think, that he loved this place so much and this is where he was killed."
The exhibition, designed by Ono and Jim Henke of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, is a retrospective of Lennon´s time in Manhattan. Included also are the upright grand piano from his room at the Dakota, a number of handwritten letters defending his right to stay in the U.S., handwritten lyrics from his last album, Double Fantasy and his iconic "New York City" t-shirt.

Steve Earle - Townes (New West)
Taking on the catalog of a friend, collaborator and musical hero is never an easy task. But ever-brash folkie Steve Earle was more than willing to do so, to honor the late legend Townes Van Zandt. What makes the record so successful is Earle´s obvious devotion to his friend and mentor, showed throughout the album in careful reproductions. According to the New West Records Web site, Earle even tought himself "Rake" and "Marie" just to be able to play them on the album.
"Poncho and Lefty" sounds just as earnest as ever thanks to Earle's mournful, dust-in-the-wind vocals. Special Guest Star Tom Morello brings extra guitar grit to "Lungs" (produced by John King of the Dust Brothers) as Earle snarls through a voice box and his wife Allison Moorer gives a little extra warmth and soul singing harmony on "To Live is to Fly."
Tomando el catálogo de un amigo, el colaborador y héroe musical son nunca una tarea fácil. Pero folkie jamás-insolente Steve Earle fue más que dispuesto a hacer para honorar así, la leyenda muerta Townes Van Zandt. Qué hace el registro tan exitoso es Earle´s devoción obvia a su amigo y el mentor, mostrado a través del álbum en reproducciones cuidadosas. The Juan MacLean - The Future Will Come (DFA)
As any self-perceived know-it-all, Pitchfork-fearing music blogger could probably attest, it would just be a whole lot easier not to have to write a particularly involved review of any DFA album, because it's expected that a) you'll gush over it and b) it will be amazing. Luckily for us––and for those of us who aren't bloggers––DFA bands keep getting rave reviews because DFA keeps putting out epic albums.
The Juan MacLean (Spanish for "John McLean") has been a part of DFA for years but has never gotten the same degree of attention from fans or critics as bigger names like LCD Soundsystem or Hot Chip, but with the release of single "Happy House," so began the buzz.
MacLean and co. veer more towards traditional house than the Disco 2.0 of other projects like Hercules & Love Affair, breaking it down to just percussion, light synths and the seductive vocals of Nancy Whang. But even with just the fundamentals, there's a lot to like here. "Accusations" features Parliament-style electric fuzz and a sexy bass riff while the new-wavey "The Station" sounds like a love child between Depeche Mode and Cut Copy. But like pretty much everything else DFA has thrown out there, the through-line of the album continues to be addictive, simple dance-pop.
"Happy House" is one of those rare tracks everyone can dance to, and the refrain of "You are so excellent" is sung so sultrily and sincerely by Whang that even the most awkward hipsters will begin to believe it as they shuffle and grind on the disco floor.
Cuando cualquier sabelotodo de ser-percibió, blogger de música que tema del Pitchfork, probablemente podría atestiguar, acabar de ser un terreno entero más fácil de no tener que escribir una revisión especialmente implicada de cualquier álbum de DFA, porque ha esperado que a) usted saldrá a chorros sobre ello y b) estará asombrando. Por suerte para nosotros––y para los que no son bloggers––bandas de DFA mantienen reseñas entusiastas que consiguen porque DFA mantiene apagar álbumes épicos.

MacLean y s.a. se vira más hacia casa tradicional que el Disco 2,0 de otros proyectos como Hercules & Love Affair, lo descomponiendo a justo percusión, sint. ligeras y el seductor vocal de Nancy Whang. Pero aún con justo los fundamentos, hay mucho en querer aquí. Las "acusaciones" representan Parlamento-Estilo pelusa eléctrica y un riff bajo atractiva mientras el nuevo-wavey "The Station" sonidos como un niño del amor entre Depeche Mode y Cut Copy. Pero como bastante mucho todo más DFA ha echado allí, la por-línea del álbum continúa ser baile-taponazo adictivo y sencillo. La "Happy House" es uno de esos vestigios raros que todos pueden bailar a, y al estribillo de "You are so excellent" es cantado tan bochornosamente y sinceramente por Whang que aún los entusiastas de jazz más difíciles comenzarán a creerlo como ellos barajan y muelen en el piso de club.

That's why the pop-punk stars-turned rock-opera librettists of Green Day have penned an album as apocalyptic, angry and bombastic as their last concept opus, American Idiot. Their second punk opera, 21st Century Breakdown, chronicles the trials of young couple Christian and Gloria as they struggle to survive in the mess of the post-Bush era. Featuring songs like "East Jesus Nowhere" and "Horseshoes and Handgrenades," the band continues to indict the Right, be it religious or political, with the added help of producer Butch Vig (Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins).

Mosquito, Mosquito’s Must-Sees: Azkena Rock Festival, Vitoria-Gasteiz
This weekend, beginning Thursday the 14th, the sleepy little northern town of Vitoria-Gasteiz will be transformed into a towering kingdom of rock with the annual Azkena Rock Festival. Featuring three days and two stages (lovingly named for departed punk musicians Lux Interior and Ron Asheton), the festival features some big names. Tickets are still on sale (95,40 Euro for a three-day pass, 33,50 for Thursday only and 49,10 for Saturday or Sunday only).

Alice Cooper (Lux Interior Stage, Sunday/domingo, 0:10h)
Alice Cooper is the reason each generation of new rock fans come hungry for more. Thanks to Alice’s love of makeup and elaborate stage antics (the most famous being his self-beheading with a giant guillotine), people come to see a band expecting pyrotechnics and all sorts of ridiculous theatrics. They come to be entertained. And even at the age of 61, the founder of shock-rock is still raring to satisfy even the most ravenous of audiences.
Alice Cooper es la razón que cada generación de nuevos aficionados de rock viene hambriento para más. But perhaps the greatest reason to go see Dr. Dog is to measure the band’s epic beards up with those of Dan Auerbach. Make it a competition.

Although their sound has gone more to the acoustic side over the years, don't think the men of Burning have gone the way of Extreme––their live shows are still as energetic as ever. And their cover versions of rock 'n' roll classics like "Johnny B. Goode" and The Stones' "Sweet Virginia" rock just as much as the originals.

In addition to the occasional new jam, The Zombies have focused on resurrecting their landmark psychedelia-tinged pop album, Odessey and Oracle, featuring songs like “This Will Be Our Year” and “She’s Not There.” While the band may only have two of its original members, it has all of its original spirit.

The organizers of the Heineken International Benicàssim Festival seem to be in agreement over which acts have been their favorites over the years. Among them are The Chemical Brothers, Lou Reed, Bjork and Brian Wilson seem to top the short list.
The festival has been a fixture of the Spanish rock world since its first appearance in 1994, when it began as a way to showcase alternatives to the dying Madrilenian Groove scene of the 1980s. "15 años de Festival," a film featuring interviews with organizers and insiders recounting their favorite moments, takes viewers through the festival's history from Dinosaur Jr. and The Stone Roses to Radiohead and Lou Reed. This year's festival will take the 16th through the 19th of July, featuring headliners Oasis, Kings of Leon, Franz Ferdinand and The Killers. Four-day passes are sold out; single-day tickets for all days except Saturday are still available for 70 €.

It's tough being a rock star. You write a million-selling, award-winning song that audiences worldwide know and love, and all these other artists want in claiming you ripped them off. Poor guys just can't catch a break, can they?
This past week, Yusuf Islam (apparently he used to be some sort of songwriter who made merry across the country under the name "Cat Stevens") announced that he would be pondering litigation against Martin and co., claiming "Viva La Vida" sounds like his 20-minute piano epic, "Foreigner Suite."
And Yusuf isn't the first to fire at the band over "Vida." In December, guitar hero Joe Satriani claimed the song plagiarized his track "If I Could Fly" and demanded royalties. The case was thrown out, with judges calling it "unoriginal."
And other bands have attacked the song without threat of a lawsuit. In June, New York indie group Creaky Boards claimed the song was ripped from one of their tracks, ironically titled, "The Songs I Didn't Write."

New Music in Brief, Week of 5/4/09:
Akron/Family - Set 'Em Wild, Set 'Em Free (Dead Oceans)
Freak-folk may no longer be the genre-du-jour, but scene fixtures Akron/Family have made the sort of album that reminds you how great the music was before Devendra Banhart started getting linked to Hollywood A-Listers. This is probably the band's most diverse record, jumping from the fuzz and crunch of the guitars on "MBF" to the sunny, blissed-out psych-pop of "Sun Will Shine (Warmth of the Sunship Version)" to the epic symphonic freakout of "Gravelly Mountains of the Moon." The light, staccato guitars and cheery whistling of "River" build until they are brought to a blissful, brassy climax with the ethereal refrain of "you and I are living free," a culmination of the album's gentle-but-rebellious flower child spirit.

The warm, countryfied guitars on his latest album with the Mystic Valley Band sound less and less like even his early forays into folk (when tastemakers were calling him "the new Dylan") and more like Being There-era Wilco. There are even some forays into straight-up happy power-pop: the upbeat, synthy "Air Mattress" sounds like Elvis Costello. The evolution in Oberst's career is clear, from the mopiness of the early Bright Eyes records to a clean, sophisticated sound with luminous guitar licks that shine like the sun on the Nebraska plains.

In the gap between the New York Dolls' genre-creating albums from the pre-punk '70s and their reunion in 2004, a whole lot happened. Frontman David Johansen donned slicked-back hair and a tuxedo and toured the world as Buster Poindexter on his hit song "Hot, Hot, Hot." Now-deceased bassist Arthur "Killer" Kane joined the Church of Jesus Christ and Latter-Day Saints. Sylvain Sylvain toured dives with a number of bands. But the Dolls' reunion, even after the loss of Kane, has been a successful one, and their second, Todd Rundgren-produced album is just as powerful as their old tracks. And the re-recording of "Trash" will hopefully encourage the younglins to check out their earlier material. The makeup may be long gone, but the sass is all there.

Akron/Family - Set 'Em Wild, Set 'Em Free (Dead Oceans)
Freak-folk may no longer be the genre-du-jour, but scene fixtures Akron/Family have made the sort of album that reminds you how great the music was before Devendra Banhart started getting linked to Hollywood A-Listers. This is probably the band's most diverse record, jumping from the fuzz and crunch of the guitars on "MBF" to the sunny, blissed-out psych-pop of "Sun Will Shine (Warmth of the Sunship Version)" to the epic symphonic freakout of "Gravelly Mountains of the Moon." The light, staccato guitars and cheery whistling of "River" build until they are brought to a blissful, brassy climax with the ethereal refrain of "you and I are living free," a culmination of the album's gentle-but-rebellious flower child spirit.

Conor Oberst and the Mystic Valley Band - Outer South (Merge)
Since when did Conor Oberst become Jeff Tweedy? The warm, countryfied guitars on his latest album with the Mystic Valley Band sound less and less like even his early forays into folk (when tastemakers were calling him "the new Dylan") and more like Being There-era Wilco. There are even some forays into straight-up happy power-pop: the upbeat, synthy "Air Mattress" sounds like Elvis Costello. The evolution in Oberst's career is clear, from the mopiness of the early Bright Eyes records to a clean, sophisticated sound with luminous guitar licks that shine like the sun on the Nebraska plains.
¿Desde cuándo Conor Oberst se metió en Jeff Tweedy? Welcome / Bienvenido
Welcome, everyone!
So you're probably wondering what this is and why a music blog would share a name with such an awful insect.
So let's start with introductions. I'm Lindsay. I'm a journalism student and pop music aficionado spending a semester at the Universidad de Navarra in Pamplona, Spain, which is how this project came to be. I started working on an independent study comparing arts and entertainment coverage in the English and Spanish-speaking worlds, focusing obviously on the U.S. and Spain. After a while of reading different "tastemaker" blogs and new music media in each region, I thought it might be interesting to start a bilingual music and entertainment blog. Mosquito, Mosquito will feature music news with an emphasis on multiple genres (pop, hip-hop, rock, indie and others), album reviews and event previews, along with plenty of other things along the way.
As for the name, when I was first learning Spanish, the first cognate we learned was that the word "mosquito" was identical in both languages, so it seemed a fitting name for me for a bilingual project.
Anyway, I hope you enjoy what Mosquito, Mosquito has to offer. Feedback of any kind is greatly appreciated.

Así que usted probablemente se pregunta lo que esto es y por qué un blog de música compartiría un nombre con un insecto tan atroz.
Así que permítanos comienzo con introducciones. Soy Lindsay. Soy un estudiante del periodismo y aficionado de música pop que está gastando un semestre al Universidad de Navarra en Pamplona, España, que es cómo este proyecto vino a ser. Empecé a trabajar en un estudio independiente que compara las artes y el entretenimiento alcance en el inglés y mundos Hispanohablantes, enfocando obviamente en EEUU y España. Después de un rato de leer blogs diferentes de "tastemaker" y nuevos medios de música en cada región, yo pensé que quizás sea interesante comenzar un blog bilingüe de música y el entretenimiento. Mosquito, Mosquito contendrá noticias de música con un énfasis en múltiples géneros (pop, hip-hop, rock, el indie y otros), revisiones de álbumes y presentaciones de eventos, junto con muchas otras cosas por el camino.
Sobre el nombre del blog, cuando aprendía primero español, el primer cognado que aprendimos fue que el "mosquito" de palabra fue idéntico en ambos idiomas, así parece un nombre apropiado para mí para un proyecto bilingüe.
De todos modos, yo espero que usted disfrute de Mosquito, Mosquito tiene que ofrecer. La reacción de cualquier tipo es apreciada mucho.
