Akron/Family - Set 'Em Wild, Set 'Em Free (Dead Oceans)
Freak-folk may no longer be the genre-du-jour, but scene fixtures Akron/Family have made the sort of album that reminds you how great the music was before Devendra Banhart started getting linked to Hollywood A-Listers. This is probably the band's most diverse record, jumping from the fuzz and crunch of the guitars on "MBF" to the sunny, blissed-out psych-pop of "Sun Will Shine (Warmth of the Sunship Version)" to the epic symphonic freakout of "Gravelly Mountains of the Moon." The light, staccato guitars and cheery whistling of "River" build until they are brought to a blissful, brassy climax with the ethereal refrain of "you and I are living free," a culmination of the album's gentle-but-rebellious flower child spirit.

Since when did Conor Oberst become Jeff Tweedy? The warm, countryfied guitars on his latest album with the Mystic Valley Band sound less and less like even his early forays into folk (when tastemakers were calling him "the new Dylan") and more like Being There-era Wilco. There are even some forays into straight-up happy power-pop: the upbeat, synthy "Air Mattress" sounds like Elvis Costello. The evolution in Oberst's career is clear, from the mopiness of the early Bright Eyes records to a clean, sophisticated sound with luminous guitar licks that shine like the sun on the Nebraska plains.

In the gap between the New York Dolls' genre-creating albums from the pre-punk '70s and their reunion in 2004, a whole lot happened. Frontman David Johansen donned slicked-back hair and a tuxedo and toured the world as Buster Poindexter on his hit song "Hot, Hot, Hot." Now-deceased bassist Arthur "Killer" Kane joined the Church of Jesus Christ and Latter-Day Saints. Sylvain Sylvain toured dives with a number of bands. But the Dolls' reunion, even after the loss of Kane, has been a successful one, and their second, Todd Rundgren-produced album is just as powerful as their old tracks. And the re-recording of "Trash" will hopefully encourage the younglins to check out their earlier material. The makeup may be long gone, but the sass is all there.
