Mosquito, Mosquito’s Must-Sees: Azkena Rock Festival, Vitoria-Gasteiz

This weekend, beginning Thursday the 14th, the sleepy little northern town of Vitoria-Gasteiz will be transformed into a towering kingdom of rock with the annual Azkena Rock Festival. Featuring three days and two stages (lovingly named for departed punk musicians Lux Interior and Ron Asheton), the festival features some big names. Tickets are still on sale (95,40 Euro for a three-day pass, 33,50 for Thursday only and 49,10 for Saturday or Sunday only).

Now, Mosquito Mosquito offers its view on which acts to watch this weekend.


Este fin de semana, empezando el jueves el 14, el pueblo pequeño de Vitoria-Gasteiz será transformado en un reino de rock con el anual Azkena Rock Festival. Con tres días y dos etapas (denominó amorosamente para los músicos muertos Lux Interior y Ron Asheton), el festival representa algunos nombres grandes. Alice Cooper (Lux Interior Stage, Sunday/domingo, 0:10h)

Alice Cooper is the reason each generation of new rock fans come hungry for more. Thanks to Alice’s love of makeup and elaborate stage antics (the most famous being his self-beheading with a giant guillotine), people come to see a band expecting pyrotechnics and all sorts of ridiculous theatrics. They come to be entertained. And even at the age of 61, the founder of shock-rock is still raring to satisfy even the most ravenous of audiences.

Alice Cooper es la razón que cada generación de nuevos aficionados de rock viene hambriento para más. Gracias al amor de Alice al constitución y elabora bufonadas del teatro (el más famoso es su ser-decapitando con una guillotina gigante), las personas vienen a ver una banda que espera la pirotecnia y todo tipo de teatro ridículo. Bad Brains (Lux Interior Stage, Friday/viernes, 20:25h)

Bad Brains are one of the clearest examples of everything for which a punk band should strive. They defied convention, defied genre and tore through the often imposing rock color line to make blistering, rapid-fire punk that still influences bands today. Now a whole new generation will get to experience the power that is Bad Brains.

Bad Brains son uno de los ejemplos más claros de todo para que una banda de punk debe esforzarse. Dan Auerbach (Lux Interior Stage, Sunday/domingo, 17:05h)

Until very recently, Auerbach was one of the hardest-working men in show business, in a little blues-rock duo called The Black Keys. Now he’s putting in twice the effort as a solo act, but it’s just as awesome.

Hasta que muy recientemente, Auerbach fuera uno de los más trabajadores en el mundo del espectáculo, en un dúo pequeño de blues-rock llamó The Black Keys. Ahora él pone en dos veces el esfuerzo como un acto solo, pero es igualmente impresionante.



The Black Crowes (Lux Interior Stage, Friday/viernes, 0:00h)

Comedian Michael Ian Black said it best in his routine about Chris Robinson's blues-rock ensemble: "These guys know how to rock and to roll." He may have been joking, but that doesn't mean it isn't true. The Crowes have hit their share of rough patches (the Amorica incident, a 2002 hiatus) but they’re back and still going strong. They’ll probably focus mostly on material from their most recent album, Warpaint, but expect a few old gems thrown in.

Already darlings of the festival circuit in the U.S., sunny psych-rock group Dr. Dog made their name opening for some of America’s biggest rock groups, including My Morning Jacket and Wilco. Their energetic, Muppet-like hopping around and shiny, Beach Boys-influenced harmonies are sure to entertain. But perhaps the greatest reason to go see Dr. Dog is to measure the band’s epic beards up with those of Dan Auerbach. Make it a competition.

Ya queridos del circuito festival en los EEUU, la banda de psych-rock de Dr. Dog hizo su nombre que abre para algunos de bandas de rock más grandes de América, inclusive My Morning Jacket y Wilco. Su saltar energético y Muppet-esque alrededor y brillante, armonías influyó de Los Beach Boys están seguras entretener. Pero quizás la razón más grande ir ve el Dr. Perro es de medir las barbas épicas de banda arriba con ésos de Dan Auerbach. Hágalo una competición.



Burning (Lux Interior Stage, Thursday/jueves, 19:20h)

In the '70s, Burning emerged as Spain's answer to bands like AC/DC and The Rolling Stones, with a sound full of powerful licks and anthemic choruses. Although their sound has gone more to the acoustic side over the years, don't think the men of Burning have gone the way of Extreme––their live shows are still as energetic as ever. And their cover versions of rock 'n' roll classics like "Johnny B. Goode" and The Stones' "Sweet Virginia" rock just as much as the originals.

En los años 70, Burning surgido como la respuesta de España a bandas como AC/DC y The Rolling Stones, con un sano lleno de coros poderosos de lamidos y anthemic. Aunque su sonido haya ido más al lado acústico con el paso de los años, no piensa que los hombres de Ardor ha padecido la suerte de Extremo––sus exposiciones vivas son todavía tan energéticas como jamás. Y sus versiones de rock ‘n’ roll clásico como "Johnny B. Goode" y The Stones’ "Sweet Virginia" mece justo tanto como las originales.



The Zombies (Ron Asheton Stage, Friday/viernes, 21:20h)

One of the most unusual comeback stories of recent rock history is that of The Zombies, who returned to rock after a near 30-year hiatus in 1991 and have toured and made music through today. In addition to the occasional new jam, The Zombies have focused on resurrecting their landmark psychedelia-tinged pop album, Odessey and Oracle, featuring songs like “This Will Be Our Year” and “She’s Not There.” While the band may only have two of its original members, it has all of its original spirit.

Uno de las historias de retornos más excepcionales de la historia reciente de rock es que de The Zombies, que volvió a la escena después d un hiato de 30 años en 1991 y ha viajado y ha hecho música por hoy. Rock and roll still has a long way to go in terms of the gender gap, but thanks to Kim Deal and Tanya Donnelly of The Breeders, it became a lot easier for girl groups to break through in the ‘90s grunge era. While their greatest legacy is their hit “Cannonball,” the rest of the set will sure be worth sticking around for.
