So there was this brief moment at the beginning of the decade when Eminem made a couple of party tracks and then faded into obscurity, lacking his usual controversy and grotesque charm. But by the middle of the horror-porn fantasy opening track "3 a.m.," he´s back to his old strategies, weaving macabre tales of fast food mass murders and fantasizing about tween TV stars. As disturbing as the images may be both here and all over the album, it´s nice to see Eminem back to his old violent, celebrity-destroying self after that awful Encore album.
While most of the album screams hit-or-miss, there are a few bright spots. "Insane" is classic, disturbed Em, weaving tales of his dark childhood. "Beautiful" is a rare moment of introspection and a gem and "Underground" may be one of the best tracks he´s ever done.
The party banger is "Old Time´s Sake," a stoner anthem featuring -- praise the Lord -- Dr. Dre. But while Dre´s appearance is a saving grace, it shows off Eminem´s faltering delivery. He tries to pass off this "Cheech and Chong"-meets-Miss Cleo accent that feels artificial and grating and takes away from the angry Midwestern boy aesthetic that makes his old material function so well. His Scottish accent on "Bagpipes from Baghdad," which probably would have been funny on one of his first two albums, is just insufferable now. Em, next time, just play it straight and leave the weird deliveries to Lil Wayne.
